People keep asking how do you research for a niche, when you know nothing about the site. The normal answer given is go to EZA or another article directory, put in your keywords, and then use the articles that are shown in the search.

What are the problems with doing research this way?

When you read them, you have no way in knowing if the information is accurate or not.

Just because the article has been approved, doesn’t mean that the information is correct.

Articles seem to be the new version of Chinese whispers, where someone reads something, and then puts their own thoughts to it, and the end result is that the information is inaccurate.

An example of this.

Someone wrote a book on copyright law. Now that information is easy to find out, because you have the government sites to check the legal figures and law on copyright.

They didn’t, they used the data found in a number of articles, and what they saw as an authority site, which were basically sites which had only content from article directories.

When pointed out that the information they gave was different to the actual copyright sites, they argued, their information had to be right, because it came from EZA.

See the problem?

When you are entering a new niche, either writing for yourself or someone else, you should always check the authority sites for you basic information.

Check the article directories to see what people have written but don’t use that information, unless you know it is accurate.

What makes an authority site? I am not talking about a site that is ranked high in Google because of the number of pages they have, or the fact that they have done their <a href="http://[token]category/seo-step-by-step"target="_blank"title="SEO" >SEO. I am talking about sites that know their subject.

Let’s look at some of these authority sites.

If you were asked to write an alcohol, then which sites are the best to get information on? The brewers would be the best sites. They will have many pages on their history, as well as their brewing process.

What about chocolate, how about those companies that make chocolate, again they know their product.

Health is a topic that people avoid because they don’t want to be sued for misinformation. We use 2 major sites, the NHS in the UK and the offical government health site in the US. Both are great starting points to discover basic information about any health related topic.

What about a product, then go to the manufacturers website. Again, dig deep on their sites, to find out what is going on. Follow through for press releases, find those hidden gems that most are missing.

Use this information as the basis of your research, and then write from a position of strength because you have done your research.
